Missouri Immigrant and Refugee Advocates (MIRA) is dedicated to working for, and with, immigrants and refugees to protect their human rights, build capacity, and advocate for a welcoming and inclusive Missouri.
Through education and advocacy, Missouri Immigrant and Refugee Advocates (MIRA) is the state’s premiere immigration public interest group.
Our coalition of more than 30 organizations grew out of the Jobs with Justice Immigrant Rights Action Task Force (IRATF) and Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride in 2003. The task force and Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride brought together leaders from ethnic and immigrant communities in the St. Louis area to speak out on issues, including comprehensive immigration reform.
In the fall of 2006, the Missouri House Special Committee on Immigration held hearings around the state. The resulting report issued by the Committee made it clear that Missouri would be facing a very difficult legislative session in regard to immigration issues. Jobs With Justice hosted a statewide meeting to bring together those groups and individuals who wanted sensible and compassionate immigration policy. That meeting launched the MIRA Coalition in November 2006.
